PFA deputy chief executive Mick McGuire believes Reds striker Wayne Rooney will be able to cope with the pressure of playing for United. He said:

"Obviously nothing can totally prepare you for the adulation or pressure which accompanies being such a brilliant young player," said McGuire.

"But as part of the scholarship program in place all our youngsters are taught a whole host of lifestyle core skills such as drug awareness, media training and how to look after your finances.

"These core skills educate them and prepare them for life as a professional footballer. There is a much greater support base for young players than there was 20 years ago when George Best lost the plot in his 20s."

McGuiree also believes that Rooney couldn't have come to a better club in terms of helping youngsters develop. He went on

"You can't overestimate the influence of Alex Ferguson will have over him. He is a no-nonsense boss. Look at Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers - you don't see any problems do you?"

"He is going to a club which has brought through six or seven major young players who have never been in an ounce of trouble. He has joined a very strong club.

"The future is looking fantastic for Wayne Rooney. I think he will mature and develop nicely because he realises the importance of his football and how his success is due to what he does on the pitch," he said.

"He's always shown the ability to focus on the pitch at all times and that's why he has been so successful. The ones who do well are the ones who love playing."
