United are currently seven points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table and have a game in hand so Rooney believes a win against them at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime would surely end all hope's they have of winning the Premier League title this season.

"We're in pole position and know if we can beat Liverpool then that'll more or less end their chances of winning the league," Rooney told MUTV

"I'm very excited about the game because I grew up as an Everton fan hating Liverpool, that hasn't changed!

"If we can beat Liverpool it will almost certainly put them out of the title race and that will be great for everybody at Old Trafford and especially for me.

"No other game is ever going to get in the way of United and Liverpool. For me it's always our biggest game of the season.

"Liverpool have put up a great challenge this season, but it would be nice if we could end that challenge at our place.

"For everyone at United, especially myself, that would be a great feeling.

"Games against Liverpool are always anxious. I'm sure it will be frantic with a lot of challenges and it's going to be difficult for both teams.

"It's a massive fixture for both clubs, especially with what's at stake."
