Van Nistelrooy, "I am ready for the new season. I had a good rest in the summer and came back for pre-season fully fit. I have had three weeks of work behind me now and I feel fit and feel good and you could see that in my game at Clyde.

"It was a good game for us. We had had a hard week's training. On Friday we had a double session and then travelled up to Scotland. They were good opposition to play against and I felt OK. They competed and you have to give them credit for that.

"I had a few good opportunities. I scored two and missed a couple as well. But that is what pre-season is all about. You can't get a good campaign if you are not fit. It's hard if you have been out for a few months and come back into the team like I had to do last season. It takes a lot of time.

"That's what it took with me and it wasn't what we all expected. The most important thing is to get fit, get your rhythm and gets lots of games. That's the main goal this season. There's a new season coming and it feels like a new start for me.

"It looks good in training, everybody's really fit and motivated and it's good to start playing some games now. It is a very important season for us. You can feel it in the players; you can feel it through whole club," he added.

"You could also sense it at Clyde on Saturday because that was the first time we'd seen some of the fans this term and you could sense the importance of the new season with them as well.

"There is no doubt about it last season was disappointing. We don't want to forget that because it is going to be a motivation for this season. I think every player at the club has that feeling inside to prove to people that we're still among the best."
