RUUD 'TO BE OFFERED NEW CONTRACT'

The Mirror:

Dropped striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will be offered a new contract after a dramatic U-turn by Manchester United.

The Dutch striker will be given a £10,000-a-week pay rise this summer despite being replaced by Louis Saha in the team. Van Nistelrooy will be told to sign the deal - and if he refuses, he will be sold.

Van Nistelrooy's current contract expires in June, 2008, and if he rejects or delays there will be no hesitation in putting him up for sale to get the maximum price.

It will be the ultimate test of loyalty for van Nistelrooy, who is watching Wayne Rooney emerge as the main man.

Responding to press coverage about Ruud's future, Fergie says:

"I did not want to change a winning team.

"There has been all this stupid talk in the media but the main question I have to answer is 'does Louis deserve to play?' I think he does.

"His scoring record has been good and he has developed a good combination with Wayne, so I am doing the right thing by him.

"Competition brings more out of players. It is a healthy situation for the football club."

Fergie dismisses Ruud rumours as he wants four strikers:

"We are fortunate with Wayne Rooney, Ruud, Louis Saha and young Giuseppe Rossi coming through, we are getting to the competition we have been looking for quite a while.

"If you go back to 1999, we had four outstanding strikers and when I picked the side for each game, the two I left out were disappointed.

"Yet they were always ready to come on and do something. Competition is a healthy state for the football club to be in."

Despite what Fergie says here, we are hearing that various sources that Ruud does believe his days are numbered.
