RUUD: 'WE CAN GET BETTER'

Last updated : 01 June 2003 By Editor

"What I want to do now is make sure players do not know what I am going to do. Because when players know what you are going to do then it often goes wrong.

"I felt good against Real. The second half of the first leg was a great performance from us.

"We showed what we were capable of and it got us back into the game. Then we went to Newcastle and scored six over there in the Premiership. That summed up our whole season.

"Overall we played well against Real Madrid and also against Juventus in our group.

"We beat them twice and we also beat Real once at home so we know we are not far away from going all the way in the Champions League.

"But we also know that we have to make another step. It is a small step but the hardest step to make."

Phil Neville: "This season he has improved his play away from the penalty box. He is getting involved more in the build-up. He has got a single-mindedness that he is going to score in every game."

Keano offers RVN praise: "His hold-up play has definitely improved in the last six months. We spoke to Ruud about it and said that as much as it is important to put the ball in the back of the net, his hold-up play is important to us as well."

Fergie: "Ruud's improvement in his team play, his link play, beating men, his whole game has gone up so many levels you can't believe.

"After 44 goals what can you say? I think, outside the goals, what you have to look at is the improvement in his team play and his linking play.

"He has beaten men and his whole general game has gone up so many levels you would not believe.

"Every week from round about October he has seemed to get better and better and he is one phenomenal centre-forward. He does not need me to place him in any pantheon of Manchester United's history because I think he is doing it himself.

"But I have to say it is so exciting looking at him that I do not know where he will end up.

"Take his goal against Fulham. That has come about through the improvement in his game. That would not have happened a year ago.
