'Considering it was his first game, I think it was magnificent,' said Ferguson. 'He obviously tired in the last 25 minutes - but his job had been done. I think everyone has seen what potential the boy has, we want to develop him, and that's going to take time.'

Ferguson told ITV: 'Attacking-wise it was very very good. I have to say that their corner kick and set-piece play was fantastic. They were really putting us under pressure, and their shots from the edge of the box were always on target. They did very well with that. They always kept us on edge - but our attacking play decided it.'

Fenerbahce coach Christoph Daum also paid tribute to Rooney.

'It was an outstanding debut, it is something you dream of as a manager for a player to play in this way and to score in this way in his first game. If he does that, it makes you very happy and you're a very lucky manager. Rooney is still very young and maybe he will become the player of the century. He is at the beginning now though.'
