Lineker in The Sunday Telegraph:

A lot of people cannot seem to understand why Paul Scholes has retired from international football but unless you have been a top international sportsman or held high office in government, it is impossible to understand the pressures.

Alan Shearer gave up international football after years of being pilloried and, a couple of seasons later, everyone was urging him to return. Correctly, he stayed retired, though I would love to see Scholes change his mind because I believe he still has a lot to offer England.

But I do not imagine that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be urging him to reconsider. In fact, you could all but hear him chuckling when the announcement was made because it gives him one less player to worry about during international weeks.
