SANTINI PRAISES FABIEN

French coach Jacques Santini has commended Fabien Barthez
for the form that he showed in the 2-0 victory over Slovenia
on Wednesday, but has also warned him that if he isn’t
playing regular football by Euro 2004 – he may not get in
the squad. Santini said:

"It seems that the less he plays with Manchester United, the
better he becomes with us. I'm very happy for him. This is
what I told him after the match last night. I trust him and
he knows it. Despite his difficult situation with Manchester
United, he managed to raise his level considerably.

"We're going to wait and see what happens but Fabien is very
calm. He puts in a lot of effort and he truly wants to wear
the blue shirt. I am extremely happy with what he has done
in the past 10 days with us. I'm only looking forward as far
as the last qualifier against Israel, but I hope that by
Euro 2004 he'll be playing (club football) again.

"If it doesn't change and this becomes a permanent situation
I'll have to think about it."

As it doesn’t look likely that Barthez will play again for
United, a transfer during the January window is the only way
for him to secure a place for the Championships.
