SCHOLES INTERVIEW

Last updated : 10 February 2003 By editor

This season your form has been outstanding, even given your own high standards. What do you put that down to?

Goals, I think. I don’t know if my performances have been that great, it’s just that I’ve been able to score more goals than I usually do.

You’ve got used to the role just behind Ruud a bit more this season, then?

It’s been a little bit different, yes. And sometimes when the manager has played two upfront I’ve played behind them so that’s helped me a bit. The goals have come with it, so it’s all come together well.

Would you say this could be your best season of form, or when do you think you played better?

We’ll we’re only halfway through the season, really. There’s still four months to go so I’ll judge it at the end of the season. I’ve matched my personal best in terms of goals already, but hopefully there’s more to come.

Much has been debated over the last couple of seasons about what your best position is. What do you think, and have you enjoyed the forward role this season?

I don’t know really. I enjoy playing anywhere. I’ve played central midfield, out on the wing, upfront and just behind either just Ruud or two strikers. I don’t really feel more comfortable playing in one position more than another – I’m happy to play anywhere in the team, as long as I’m playing!

Your goal-scoring run hit the headlines - did it even surprise you?

It did a bit, scoring six in a row. I was just lucky to get in the right position at the right time for a few games in a row.

Which was your favourite strike?

I don’t really have one. They all mean the same to me – and that’s a lot. I haven’t got a favourite from those six, though.

Were you disappointed when you came off in the West Ham match and ended your scoring streak?

It’s always disappointing when you don’t score. I should have scored in the West Ham match but I hit the post, so I had the chance to extend the run. That was one of those things – runs have to end somewhere.

What do you think of the Zidane comparisons in the press?

I think it’s laughable, to be honest. Everyone knows what a great player he is and how he can turn games on his own. He’s the best player in the world and to be honest I’m nowhere near him. It’s nice to be mentioned in the same breath as him, but I’ve got no illusions.

The other headline recently was the manager saying the only club you'd leave United for would be Oldham... what's your response to that?

It’s probably true, yes. I always supported Oldham as a kid so it would be nice to go and play for them later in my career. But you never know, the club might want to sell me before then. You don’t know what the future holds. It might be nice one day, though.

Could you see yourself playing for another club?

Not really. I won’t be asking to leave, so unless the club want to sell me then I won’t be going anywhere.

Manchester City are the next visitors to Old Trafford. For you and the rest of the team, is this match much more important that just three points?

No it’s not, it’s just about three points as is every game from now on whether it’s City, Arsenal, Liverpool or whoever. We’ve got to beat everyone. Hopefully we can beat City to get the three points we need right now.

You were the only player to come out of the Maine Road derby with any praise. How frustrating was it playing in that match?

It’s always frustrating to lose, but that was worse because we didn’t play well. We got what we deserved and we’ll be looking to do better this time. But now we’ve got to concentrate on this match now. We’ve got to beat them – not because it’s City but because we need the three points. What’s happened before is gone now – we have to look forward.

Do you think the local lads get more fired up for the Derby than the overseas players?

I don’t think so. Everyone knows what Derby matches are all about – the foreign lads are no different. We know it’s a vital game that we have to win, so we all know exactly what we have to do.

Who do you think will prove dangerous in the City team?

Anelka is the obvious one, but now they’ve got Fowler as well so they’ll be very dangerous upfront.

After City, there are two big games in a week ... who do you think will provide the bigger test, Juventus or Arsenal?

They’ll all be very difficult games. Juventus are a world class team and are very tough to play against. Arsenal in the FA Cup we know all about, so both will be difficult games and tough to separate.

People said the Treble was a one-off, but United are going well on all four fronts this year. Do you think it's foolish to allow yourself to think of the Quadruple, or do you think it's possible?

I think so, yes. We just have to carry on and see how far we can get. There’s a long way to go and hopefully we’ll still be in the hunt come April or May.
