SECURITY CLAMPDOWN

"We always review security after any incident like this," said United director of communications Paddy Harverson.

"Everyone who gets on the pitch knows we will take action against them. We view any breach of ground security very seriously."

And this from The Observer:

United are facing a security crisis after a fan invaded the pitch at Old Trafford and clashed with goalkeeper Fabien Barthez on the same afternoon Victoria Beckham learned she had been the subject of an alleged kidnap plan.

The supporter shoved off the attentions of Barthez - at one point grabbing the Frenchman around the head - as he made his way on to the playing surface 20 minutes from the end of the Premiership game with Southampton.

He then ran towards the halfway line, avoiding capture, but being spurned by United players as the capacity crowd grew increasingly restless. Finally, Ruud van Nistelrooy grabbed the intruder from behind before a clutch of security guards wrestled him to the floor. Five people were needed to quieten the man who now faces a lifetime ban from Old Trafford and possibly other grounds.
