'The win put United on nine points in the table and they now face a crucial final game at home to Manchester City on 3 February.

After a lacklustre opening half an hour during which neither side registered a single shot on target, United took the lead four minutes from the break after Mads Timm's diagonal shot from the edge of the area deflected in off the inside of the post.

Bolton drew level on 56 minutes when Florent Laville poked the ball home having seen his initial header cleared off the line by Ben Collett just seconds earlier.

Collett himself nearly put United ahead soon after, but his 30-yard strike from the left-wing position sailed just over the bar with Bolton goalkeeper Przemiflaw Kazimierczak stranded.

The Trotters keeper pulled off an excellent save minutes later from his own player Reese Powell, who made a real hash of clearing a shot from David Poole and, but for a great save from his keeper, would have registered an o.g.

Seven minutes from time United grabbed the winner through Poole, who ran onto a good through pass and coolly slotted the ball home.

United starting XI: Heaton, Picken, Eckersley, Evans, Hogg, Jones, Poole, Martin, Cooper, Timm, Collett.'
