The tough gum chewing Scotsman from Govern walked out at Old Trafford before United's game with Swansea with no doubt emotion as he walked to that famous dug-out for the final time. In 1986 he left Aberdeen after breaking the Glasgow mafias monopoly on Scottish football to try and break Liverpool's stranglehold. His first few seasons were not a success as Liverpool continued to rule the roost.
1990 saw them reach the FA cup final, and after a 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace, defeated them 1-0 in the replay. Lee Martin scored the winner and they say it was a goal that saved Fergie's career. 38 trophy's later he retire's ranked as one of the greatest manager's that lived.
I remember the late great Brian Moore's commentary when Mark Hughes scored that wonderful goal in the 1991 Cup winners cup final against Barcelona. In the last season of the old division one they were pipped by Leeds United for the title and a certain Monsieur Cantona.
On the first day of the new Premier league they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United. Nine months later they won the title with the enigmatic Cantona part of the team. I still remember those two late goals by Steve Bruce as United defeated Sheffield Wednesday and the title race swung towards Old Trafford.
Sir Alex was master of the mind games as well with of course the famous Kevin Keegan rant on Sky TV as his Newcastle team collapsed after being 12 points in the lead.
The treble of 1999 was his greatest achievement with the Red Devils and those two late goals against Bayern Munich still bringing a tingle to the spine. After their neighbours Man City won the title last year,he has masterminded another title win .He guarantee's a blue(or should i say red) riband signing every summer.
David Moyes has a tough act to follow but for now let's celebrate the achievements of Sir Alex Ferguson.
