SMITH WANTS TO STAY

"I have a contract re-negotiation coming up.

"I was due contract talks last year and we decided, the club and myself, that I wouldn't do that when I was injured, because it wasn't fair on them.

"But now I am fit and ready to commit my future. I want to stay at United. My agent has spoken with the club and the talks should happen in the next few weeks."

More:

"There are a lot of players at United who have had bad injuries.

"Ole is such a lovely person, and has been out for over two years with bad injuries but you would see him in every day in training, working in the gym to stay fit.

"Roy Keane also went through a period where he had massive injuries and the club gave him time to work on it and establish himself back in the team as well.

"First and foremost you have to be strong yourself, and never stop believing that you can get back in that first team."

The Super Soaraway Sun:

Alan Smith has been told by Manchester United: You're not getting a new contract.

That will trigger a bidding war — with Spurs, Everton, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa all keen to land him.

The England frontman, 26, wanted to extend his stay at Old Trafford with two years to run on his current agreement. But now it seems United are ready to sell.

The Red Devils have spent £48million since the end of the season — on Nani, Anderson, and Owen Hargreaves — and want some cash back.

Smith, who earns around £50,000 a week, signed for United in a £7m switch from Leeds three years ago.

He had a renewal clause in his original deal which entitled him to a rise after two years at the club. But Smith waived that because he was injured at the time.
