"But it encouraged me to keep going.
"I take it as a real compliment that I am a part of the history of this club and it is great to hear the fans singing your name, even when you're out injured. And I still hope to contribute in the next couple of years.
"The support I've had through the years at United has been fantastic. The club have supported me all the time, as has the manager and everyone.
"I always just wanted to show that I could get back. I didn't want to just say 'That's it'. I wanted to give it a go."
