The Evening News reports that United attempted to sign 17 year old striker Javi Garcia from Madrid. However Garcia is quoted as telling Spanish paper AS:
"The first thing I knew about the offer from Manchester was from my father and then my agent. I could not believe it; it is very pleasant to known that a side like Manchester is interested - as they are one of the best side's in the world.
"But I never wanted to leave Madrid, not for Manchester or any club. I am very happy here and they deal with me very well, Madrid is Madrid - the club of my soul."
