The BBC report:

‘Birmingham City manager Steve Bruce has been attacked outside his home. The incident happened in Dorridge in the early hours of Saturday morning and although not seriously injured, Bruce suffered bruising around his face.

‘A spokesman for the club said Bruce was jumped on by two men after he went outside to investigate his daughter's car alarm going off.

Peter Schmeichel, Bruce's former team-mate at Manchester United, said: "You cannot shake him. He is a strong character. As far as he is concerned it is all going to be forgotten about and he will be focusing on his team."

Bruce himself said yesterday, “I don't have much pace these days and they got away. To be honest, I wasn't the quickest when I was playing either!

"I just thought the car alarm was faulty and needed resetting. But I knew something was wrong when I saw someone in it. I think they were after the stereo. I asked what they were playing at and grabbed a guy.

"I look like I've gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson - but the cuts and bruises aren't a problem. I wouldn't say anything about it, only our match is on TV and people are bound to wonder why my face is in such a state. It was nothing really. It was over in seconds."
