Ex-Manchester United captain Steve Bruce believes he could help his former club ‘stabilise’ following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the weekend.
United have placed Michael Carrick in temporary charge as a caretaker manager for the time being, with the intention of appointing an interim until the end of the season and then a permanent successor to Solskjaer in the summer.
Bruce was recently sacked by Newcastle following the PIF takeover at St James’ Park but would seemingly be ready to help the club he captained to three Premier League titles and two domestic doubles in the 1990s if they were to ask for it.
The Athletic has described Bruce as ‘very keen’ on the role as interim United manager as he believes he could ‘help stabilise the dressing room’ until the permanent choice is made. Whether that interest is reciprocated by the club is unclear.
Bruce's name was even mentioned by former Arsenal and Tottenham defender Sol Campbell, who stressed that a short-term offer to Bruce should not be disregarded immediately.
"You know, it is a really sticky situation," he said (via the Newcastle Chronicle). “Do they stick or move? If they are moving, it is costing them a lot of money, to move Ole on and bring somebody else in, it’s a lot of money.
“I know they have got a lot of money to go and spend…and you do have to look at the books.
"Is a Steve Bruce for six months any good?" asked Campbell. "Just for six months? I don't know, who knows. It's a real sticky wicket there. Whatever they do, it might be the wrong one."
Although it seems he is only throwing his hat in the ring to help out in the short-term, Bruce is not in the same calibre as other names being linked with the United job like Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane, Brendan Rodgers or Erik ten Hag.
Bruce was an unpopular appointment at former club Newcastle because of his less than outstanding record as a Premier League manager over the last 20 years and it is likely that, despite his achievements as a player at Old Trafford, United fans would take to him even less fondly should the club go down that route – which does seem improbable at this stage.
