STEVE BRUCE LOOKING TO END UNITED JINX

"Of course it would mean more to me," Steve told the Evening News. "I still see Manchester United as the prime test to take something from. And you are not at a club like that for nine years like I was and not feel some sense of extra satisfaction when you get something from a game against them.

"They are a very special club but, after having been a part of what they have achieved, it would be great to be able to say that as a manager I have been able to get something from a match against them. I left Old Trafford eight years now but I still get as many letters from United fans as I do from Birmingham City fans.

"They want me to sign photographs from my playing days there and they are all very supportive of my career now. I think that will probably happen for the rest of my days and I find that very flattering. It was, and always will be, an incredible club.

"No matter how much I learned and knew about that when I was there, it is only when you are looking at it from the outside that you fully realise what a fabulous place it is. It is ironic that while I have managed to take points off the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool, the one team I haven't done it against is United. I'd love to complete the set!"

Bruce also thinks that Dwight Yorke is struggling to get over leaving United. He only has himself to blame if so.

"I was delighted to get him because Dwight will always be Dwight and that means he has that handy knack of scoring a goal. I didn't think his career has gone off the rails but what I think he found out after leaving Old Trafford was exactly what I found out. That is, wherever you go, it is a backward step.

"Players do take time to adjust to not being at Manchester United football club. I was 36 when I left and knew in my heart of hearts I couldn't still play at that level but it was still hard to come to terms with it.

"I think it has taken Dwight a few years to get over the disappointment of finishing his United career. But it has been good to see him doing well here and nobody at Old Trafford needs reminding what a talent he is."
