STRACHAN & STEPTOE

From The Guardian:

'Phil Neville was the key in many ways for Manchester United. His defending gave the team a basis from which they could win the game because he blocked off the areas where Arsenal love to attack. I think Roy Keane would have been hard pressed to beat the way Neville played that position yesterday.

Arsenal usually do most of their attacking down their left but this was the quietest I have seen them there. We did not see much of Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry or José Antonio Reyes and a lot of that was down to Neville. He did the job I thought United had to do, getting into the holes where Arsenal can be so dangerous.

Not once did Bergkamp get into space and do some magic. Reyes was taken off and Henry almost never went in his favourite position on Arsenal's left where he attacks full-backs and centre-backs and gets shots off or sets things up. Neville is perfect for the job that was needed because can get about the place and understands what defending and discipline are about.

If Ashley Cole had the ball, Neville would block the pass into Henry's feet and Bergkamp would not even bother coming over because he knew there was no point. Even if Cole got a pass into Reyes, Neville could make it two against one by supporting his brother Gary. Whenever the ball went to that side it was an old B-movie from the 50s: The Attack of the Nevilles.

Phil Neville has taken plenty of stick since England's game against Romania at Euro 2000 but United fans know he is decent. He is always there to do a job and, without Keane yesterday, he made a big difference in a big match.'
