The People:

Sir Alex Ferguson has become embroiled in an embarrassing row over the player hailed as the French Wayne Rooney.

Sochaux striker Jeremy Menez, 16, is the hottest property in France, recently hitting a league hat-trick against Bordeaux.

And it has now emerged that Ferguson offered Menez a lucrative deal to cross the channel and join Manchester United.

Fergie's approach - made directly to the teenager's family - was strictly legal as the player had yet to sign a professional deal at Sochaux.

But in a shock twist, the exact details of Fergie's proposal will be made public because the wonderboy's former agent is suing Menez for REFUSING the offer.

In fact, Patrick Mendelewitsch is taking Menez, his parents and Sochaux to court and his claim for compensation is due to be heard before the Tribunal de Grande Instance at Creteil, near Paris.

And that means a public airing for the United offer that Menez's mum Pascale Balcon quantifies as an enormous amount of money

Sky Sports:

Some of Europe's biggest clubs are in hot pursuit of Lyon's talented Ghana international Mickael Essien, according to the player's agent.

Fabien Piveteau claims that Juventus, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal want to sign the midfielder, whose performances have been instrumental in Les Gones' successful Champions League campaign so far. (Also in The Express)
