TAKE A BREAK

Alex Stepney thinks the signing of Edwin van der Sar gives United some stability and despite his advancing years United will be able to bring a keeper through the ranks now.

"It's a very clever move by Sir Alex just after Roy Carroll finished at the club,"

"There was a lot of speculation but Edwin was hardly mentioned.

"He turns 35 this year but some goalkeepers play on until they're 40."

"He's played in the Champions League and has got a lot of great experience, which to be honest over the last three seasons United have lacked in the big games.

"He's been with Fulham for four years, he's played fantastically well and they've stayed in the Premiership. His performances have been superb so why not buy him?

"Not only that, he gives United probably a two or three-year break now where they can look for someone to come through."
