The MEN report:

A Budding soccer star attacked two policemen after he was stopped for drink-driving on the day he signed for Manchester City. Phil Gilder, 18, went "berserk" after being breath-tested and had to be subdued with CS spray.

Today his career was in the balance and he was facing jail after he admitted drink driving and police assault. Manchester City Magistrates Court was told the incident happened the day the teenager signed for the club he has supported all his life.

The judge heard that Gilder had been driving a pal's car last Friday when he was stopped near his home in Clayton, Manchester and failed a breath test. Prosecutor Andrew Holt said when arrested Gilder turned nasty with the officers and during a violent struggle, tried to kick them.

Gilder, of Clayton, admitted driving with excess alcohol and two counts of police
assault. A product of the club's Platt Lane Youth Academy, he said his ambition was to play for the club at the new Eastlands stadium.

In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, the midfielder confided his
favourite player and the one he tried to model himself on, was United's England
captain David Beckham.
