Team of the week 120312

Last updated : 12 March 2012 By DSG

A decisive weekend in the Premier League title race and also at the bottom of the table.

Manchester United were aiming to return to the top as they faced West Brom, while rivals City were away at Swansea. Bolton and QPR went head-to-head in a relegation 6 pointer.

Here is the Football.co.uk Premier League team of the week.

Position : Goalkeeper
John Ruddy (Norwich City)
The Canaries keeper needed to be at his best to keep out a resilient Wigan side for as long as he did. The 25-year-old was called upon to pull off a number of brilliant saves, until he was eventually beaten by Victor Moses in the 68th minute.

Position: Defender
John Heitinga (Everton)
Tottenham dominated the play throughout the game and the Dutchman needed to be at his very best to keep them at bay. His solid and resilient display at the back was typical of Everton in recent weeks, as they consigned Spurs to their third defeat in a row.

Position: Defender
Steven Caulker (Swansea City)
The Swansea centre-back has made the team for the second week running. Swansea upset the odds after recording a hard fought victory over Manchester City to knock them off top spot. It was their seventh home clean sheet of the season and certainly one of their best.

Position: Defender
Ashley Williams (Swansea City)
Caulker's defensive partner was equally as important in the win over City. Ashley Williams was immovable in the heart of the Swansea defence, giving the star-studded line up of City little chance to score. The win sent out a message to the rest of the league that playing football the right way can prevail.

 Hoilett image

Position: Midfielder
Junior Hoilett (Blackburn Rovers)
Blackburn look like they could be turning things around under manager Steve Kean. Their efforts are being rewarded with points and they picked up a huge three points against Wolves. Winger Junior Hoilett was in sensational form and scored two superb goals that take Rovers out of the bottom three.

Position: Midfielder
Ryo Miyaichi (Bolton Wanderers)
On-loan Arsenal midfielder Miyaichi was the difference between the sides when Bolton met Queens Park Rangers in the relegation six pointer at the Reebok on Saturday. His magic touch was a constant threat to QPR and was key to Bolton picking up an extremely controversial yet vital victory.

Position: Midfielder
Darren Pratley (Bolton Wanderers)
Having got off lightly with the linesman failing to spot the ball crossing the line, Bolton sensed QPR were on the ropes. While QPR were extremely unlucky, Bolton responded in the best way possible by going up the other end and scoring. Darren Pratley rose above the defenders with a superbly timed header to put Bolton 1-0 up before half-time.

Position: Midfielder

Ashley Young (Manchester United)
The England winger was excellent last weekend against Tottenham and was equally as good against West Brom. He has finally hit top form since signing for United in the summer for ?16million. it was his run in the second half that forced the error from Andrews and won the penalty for Rooney to dispatch.

Position: Forward
Victor Moses (Wigan Athletic)
For a side that are currently bottom of the table, Wigan certainly know how to play well away from home. Victor Moses was superb and a constant thorn in the side of Norwich as Wigan dominated the second half in search of an equaliser. His strike 20 minutes from time was the goal they desperately required.

Position: Forward
Nicklas Bendtner (Sunderland)
While Martin O'Neill might be amused by Bendtner's incredibly high opinion of himself, he will still be delighted with his winning goal against Liverpool on Saturday. The unpredictable Danish forward was on hand to tap in after Frazier Campbell's shot had hit the post twice.

Position: Forward
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
The two goals against West Brom has made it nine in six games for Rooney. The England forward is once again back to playing at his best and United have reaped the rewards by soaring back to the top of the Premier League table.
