TELEGRAPH - FERGIE'S AXE ATTACK

From Torygraph:

'The United manager said that one of his players would have to be "hit by an axe" before they were given a penalty after the public outcry against Wayne Rooney. The striker was accused of conning referee Mike Riley in the victory over Arsenal when he won a decisive spot-kick against Sol Campbell.

"Maybe European football represents a bigger game for them and the mundane challenges of the league are not the same."

Ferguson was most angry with Poll, who failed to give two penalties in the first five minutes for a Sylvain Distin foul on Mikael Silvestre and then Antoine Sibierski's pull on Louis Saha.

"We think they were clear penalties but we were given that one against Arsenal and we're being penalised for that," Ferguson said.

"There was no way we were going to get it. One of our players would have to be hit by an axe before we get one. They were clear penalties but we just have to suffer at the moment."

Ferguson also said that Poll had given just two yellow cards to City – Stephen Jordan and Willo Flood – while Smith had been penalised for both his fouls. "It seems absolutely ridiculous to me," he said.
