TEST OF CHARACTER

"I think I would have been hated by 67,000 people if I had denied him that, there were five minutes left and it's nice for him to get a goal," Beckham said. "It's important for Diego. It has been a long time and the crowd have been brilliant for him. He works hard for the team and he created chances for others last night."

"We haven't really been scoring or creating chances but the two players up front worked hard to do that tonight," he said. "There were a couple of sloppy goals given away and we wanted to get off to a good start."

Forlan said: "I'm very happy to score my first goal and also it's great that we won such an important match because in the Champions League we have to win at home. I hope the goals will come now because I have done my best in training and when I have the opportunity I always take it."

Ferguson was relieved that his strikers bagged a goal apiece.

"The Solskjaer goal showed us what a great goalscorer he is and hopefully this result will kick-start our confidence. Ruud took his goal well and he made a great goal for Ole. At half-time I said it was our job to make sure they didn't get in our half because they were quite skilful."

Ferguson told the post match press conference that Ruud van Nistelrooy had picked up a slight calf injury but should be fit for Saturday.
