THE CARLING CUP IS VERY IMPORTANT SAYS FERGIE

"The important thing at our club is to try and do well in all the tournaments.

"The Carling Cup has always been viewed slightly differently. Now, we come into the tournament later, which gives the teams in Europe more incentive to be more ambitious about it.

"You have more of an opportunity because you don’t have the two-legged ties near the start of the season any more. It will be a young team, but they are all fresh and fit and they can handle it. The team that plays on Tuesday will be out to win it."

"We have always looked at the Carling Cup in a certain way but coming in at the third round stage gives us the opportunity to be more ambitious about it now.

"We are only three games away from the final, so I will be picking a strongish side, although it will include all the young lads."

Steve Bruce says:

"There is never a good time to play Man United because you know what you are going to get. It's a fantastic cup tie but they are at their best when they are wounded and come out with that fighting spirit which makes them the great team they are.

"They think that the world is against them and they come out and produce a performance and it will be tough. They have just gone out of Europe so I am convinced they will want to try and win this competition, that's for sure.

"Whatever team they put out, when Man United come to town, it is going to be a tough, tough game but one that we will relish and we will look forward to the challenge."

From The BBC:

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will check on the fitness of Louis Saha and Alan Smith.

Both men suffered from viruses and Ferguson will want to be sure they are 100% fit before he selects them again.
