THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Gary Pallister thinks that this united team can use the cup final as a springboard
to better things just like the tam of 1990 did.

"Without a shadow of a doubt 1990 was a great springboard for that side," Gary told M.E.N. Sport.

"There is nothing better than winning a trophy. It was the first major one for
myself and plenty of others in that United squad and it gives you the appetite.
You realise you can do it.

"We had had a lousy season in the league and there was pressure. But in the FA Cup we showed we could win trophies. We proved we were good enough to do
it.

"You gain that hunger to go out and repeat it. You want to experience that buzz
over and over again. It also gave us a lot of self-belief in the dressing room. If we hadn't won that FA Cup who knows what would have happened.

"For starters we wouldn't have been in Europe the year after and wouldn't have
beaten Barcelona in the Cup-Winners' Cup final and gained from the belief that
gave us to have been able to take it onto another level.

"As in 1990, it has been a huge learning curve for the new players at Old Trafford this season.

"They have to grasp it and take it on board for next season. It has been a
campaign of learning for them and only a few have produced the goods. But they will all have to start producing next year.

"Only winning the trophy will provide the thrust we gained 14 years ago. Losing
on Saturday could have the opposite affect."
