A tribute to the victims of the Munich air disaster will be unveiled today in Germany. Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Alex Ferguson and Reds chief executive David Gill are all to attend the unveiling of the memorial at the site of the tragic disaster.

The memorial stone will feature the names of the 23 people who died in the crash on 6 February 1958 - including eight Manchester United players - and will also bear the coats of arms of Manchester and Munich.

Hermann Memmel, a German politician who has campaigned for a fitting memorial at the site and who worked on the current project, said the tribute will be a mark of humanity.

"When Man United play in Munich, Kirchtrudering becomes something of a place of pilgrimage for the English.

"A memorial for the victims of the Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958 shows a mark of humanity and represents a contribution to international understanding between England and Germany that is not to be underestimated.

"You can only appreciate the symbolism of this memorial if you understand the depth of feeling the 1958 disaster still evokes in England," added Memmel.
