The Manchester United XI That Should Start Against Tottenham in the Premier League

The Premier League fixtures start coming at us thick and fast now that we're into December, and it's fair to say the pressure is ramping up on Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian is failing to have the transformative effect that many fans hoped he would have on United's ailing fortunes, with the Red Devils currently ninth in the table after picking up just four wins in 14 matches.

It seems as though Solskjaer knows he needs results fast, but they don't come much harder than their next two, with Tottenham - led by former manager Jose Mourinho - and Manchester City in United's crosshairs.

Here, 90min looks at the lineup that Solskjaer should pick to take on the Special One...

Goalkeeper & Defenders

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

David de Gea (GK) - One of the few places in United's team that is set in stone is De Gea's in goal. The Spaniard being on form is vital to any success the side may have, and he could be a busy man against the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and a resurgent Dele Alli.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - A huge price tag was always going to put a tonne of expectation on Wan-Bissaka's young shoulders. Has coped well thus far, and is a cut above any other options that United have.

Victor Lindelof (RCB) - A goal at the weekend was obviously a nice lift for Lindelof, but it's confidence at the back that is key to United doing well. His communication and understanding with Harry Maguire is improving week by week, but clean sheets are the ultimate goal.

Harry Maguire (LCB) - Maguire must often ask himself why he opted to choose the red half of Manchester over the blue, but poor results have not been for the want of trying on his part. Looks assured most of the time, but is susceptible still to those who have extreme pace.

Luke Shaw (LB) - There has been high praise indeed for young Brandon Williams since he stepped up to fill the void left by Shaw's latest spell out injured. But the former Saint is back in shape, raring to go and should, based on experience alone, reclaim his place for such a big game.

Midfielders

Scott McTominay

Fred (CM) - United really, really miss Paul Pogba in the middle of the park, but there's no denying that Fred is improving as time goes on. The Brazilian has a good work ethic and looks more comfortable in his surroundings when he's alongside Scott McTominay.

Scott McTominay (CM) - Has been out of action since the 3-1 win over Brighton at the beginning of November, but appears to be ready to plunge back into the deep end. His infectious enthusiasm, leadership and hard work have been missed, with Andreas Pereira, despite providing a superb assist for Marcus Rashford against Villa, a bit all over the place.

Jesse Lingard (AM) - 2019 hasn't been a great year for Lingard, that much we do know. But what we also know is that he'll put himself about, close down and put a shift in during the big games. Often turned to by Mourinho for that reason during his spell in charge, he should have the same faith placed in him by Solskjaer.

Forwards

Anthony Martial,Marcus Rashford

Daniel James (RW) - For all of United's woes, James has been the constant ray of sunshine beaming down the right hand side. With pace to burn and an eagerness to impress those who say he's not up to it, the Welshman could be the difference maker if he's able to get the better of Danny Rose.

Anthony Martial (ST) - Back in the central role after flirting with the left wing for the past couple of years, it's now time for Martial to find consistency. Spurs seem to like conceding goals, even under Mourinho, so now is the time for the Frenchman to find his mojo.

Marcus Rashford (LW) - Can blow very hot, hot, cold and very cold, much to the annoyance of United's fanbase. His ability to change games makes him one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League, though, and he could be key to stretching the game with his intelligent wing play.
