THE PR BLITZ BEGINS

The Mail on Sunday:

Manchester United are set to launch a major public relations offensive in an attempt to win back the support of fans disaffected by the takeover of the club by Malcolm Glazer.

Chief executive David Gill and the United board are determined to convince the doubters that the new American owners will improve the club, both on and off the field.

And after a period when the Glazers were criticised for their lack of communication with fans, Gill is planning to work hard to regain the supporters' trust.

'Yes, there are a minority who will never change their opinion or their feelings about the takeover and we have to accept that,' said Gill. 'We have to work on the majority; say what we're doing, to make sure we have a great team on the pitch and provide a great facility for them to come to.'

That will be no easy task given the extent of the disquiet since American tycoon Malcolm Glazer brought United a month ago.

Even before he became the club's majority shareholder, hundreds of fans protesting outside Old Trafford burned their season-ticket renewal forms.

'Nobody wants to see the kind of violence that occurred outside Old Trafford,' said Gill. 'Peaceful protest is fine but the worse kind of anti-Glazer demonstrations don't get us anywhere. It is not going to change the situation.'

Gill added: "I can understand where the anxiety of the fans comes from. You had a debt-free club with a fantastic stadium which is being expanded; a great training ground, a great manager and a great set of players, and you went from that to this new situation.

'But I don't think it's as black as some people would paint it.

"I'm not sitting here and saying I've suddenly seen the light with the Glazers' plan. I think there are certain issues involved and hopefully, as we get to know them better, I can explain some of the concerns we have and explain where some things may work and others won't.

"But that obviously works both way's - the Glazers have some good ideas and we need to explore them. We have no God-given right to believe our way of running things is perfect."

"Of course there were occasions when I had to consider my position at the club. It's not nice for you to hear calls for you to go, but I believe it's from a very small fraction of the fans.

"At the present time I think United need stability and I also have to do what's right for me. I have been here now for more then eight years and why should I give up a job I love just to appease a few ?'

All of a sudden there is money available:

"There is money available for Alex.

"If he identifies a talent that he thinks will improve the squad - and that is the crucial thing - the funds are available.

"The Glazers have said that if there is a big player out there who is available, then the money is there to go for him.

"We can still afford a lot of money for top players and at the same time we are also able to develop many of our own."
