THE PRESS NICK OUR RIO INTERVIEW

A couple of bits here - you'll just have to buy the mag for the others!!

He says the appeal had nothing to do with England

"I apologise [for missing the drug test] because obviously I wasn't responsible enough on the day.

"If it meant missing eight months of the season then obviously I wasn't being responsible.

"But there's stuff that happened before with other players and precedents were set. They went beyond those in my case. I take it that there's some deep-lying thing underneath what happened."

"At the time, I didn't know if I'd play for England ever again. When I got banned people were saying that I was looking at three months on appeal.

"So I was thinking, 'If I start my ban early then I'll be back for the Porto Champions League game'. I thought I'd be able to come back before the end of the season.

"It had nothing to do with playing for England. I sat down with the manager and discussed all this stuff and it was all in the interests of myself and United.

"Even the TV ad was taken out of context. I wasn't laughing at the issue. It was my way of saying I was thinking about what was going on, that I wasn't just sitting at home enjoying my life and going out partying.

"If it came out as though I was laughing at the system then I apologise, but it wasn't supposed to be like that.

"I didn't play for eight months and there wasn't a day I didn't think about it.

"I could have been playing when we won the FA Cup, when England went to the European Championship.

"I was sitting in a bar in America watching a game, singing Wayne Rooney songs, but at the same time it really hit home that I should have been playing.

"Anyone who thinks I was laughing at the situation couldn't have been further from the point."

He fancies playing abroad perhaps

"Pini is a great guy. (that's his agent, who has strong links with Chelsea)

"People say 'Oh but he must be talking to you about Chelsea and telling you to go there' but he's not that type of person.

"There's been other clubs interested in me and he's said 'So and so want you, what do you think?'

"And I'd say 'Pini, I don't really want to do that, I don't fancy going there' and he'll tell me it isn't a problem.

"As a kid I always said I'd like to go abroad. Not for the football but the lifestyle.

"I can't see myself wanting to go anywhere while we're winning with United. I don't have a burning desire to go abroad yet.

"But in the future, you never know, your feelings might change."
