Meanwhile the FA has defended its decision to host the FA Cup semi-finals at Villa Park and Old Trafford after disappointing ticket sales.

"The bottom line yesterday was that Manchester United sold their allocation and Watford, who asked for a full allocation, were unable to sell their allocation, which left a few thousand empty seats," said an FA spokesman.

"With regard to today's game, we were limited to the number of venues which could potentially stage the game.

"We gave Chelsea and Blackburn a large allocation, around 30,000 each.

"We understand it is a very busy time for supporters, particularly those of clubs still involved in Europe, but we try to choose grounds which are suitable both in capacity and geographically in order to allow as many fans as possible to see the games, and we have tried to price the tickets sensibly.

"But it is a Catch-22 situation: on the one hand, you have Manchester United fans who could not get tickets for yesterday's game, and then we have made a lot of tickets available for today's game and now we are being criticised for having empty seats at the stadium because we have chosen a largest capacity stadium available to us."
