THE TRANSITION IS OVER

With United no longer considered a European power in the Champions League Rio Ferdinand believes it is about time the club went about enhancing its reputation by winning some trophies.

"I came to Old Trafford to win trophies. Part of that is winning European trophies and we have not managed to do that," Rio said.

"The last couple of years we have been in a bit of a transitional period, blending our younger players with the experienced ones. That happens to all teams but I think we have done it to a bigger degree here at United.

"But it is time for us now to prove our worth as individuals and as a team. It was very disappointing last year on a personal level, individually and collectively as a group.

"You want to perform at any given time and the Champions League is a great opportunity to showcase your talents and as a team and we didn't manage to do that. We need to take the negatives from last time and turn them into positives this time. As a group we are stronger.

"Coming back to a place like this in Lisbon we want to prove we are better as a team and better as individuals than we were last time we were here.

"Sitting at home when the Champions League draws were made without us last season and thinking we could have been in the next round was disappointing and I wouldn't want to be in that situation again."
