THEY'LL BE THOUSANDS OF REDS

From The Sunday Times:

Porto’s inspiration is Deco, a Brazilian-born Portugal international who plays just behind the strikers, and they are a team with experience, notably in goalkeeper Vitor Baia and defender Jorge Costa. They will be missing the suspended Costinha for the first leg against United, which will take a little steel out of their midfield and deprive them of a useful target man in set pieces.

Mourinho says he is pleased with the draw, not least because it brings glamorous opponents to their new stadium in Oporto, an arena built for next summer’s European Championship. The most recent precedent bodes well for United — a 4-0 quarter-final win in 1997 — but the Porto coach believes his team has a "50-50" chance of progress. A meticulous preparer for games, he will consult widely to improve those percentages. He has already spoken to Robson about the tie, and you’ll see him at Old Trafford over the coming months.

"The players took the news of the draw well," said Mourinho. "This team is strong mentally and well- organised enough to deal with 70,000 Englishmen.

"We’ve been calm about all our Champions League matches. It is going to be difficult, but I look forward to two pretty even games."
