‘A NEW police recruit could face the sack after apparently confessing to lying in court. She handed over her driving licence with three penalty points in a training session after an inspector asked for one to demonstrate checking documents.

But the WPC, who is in her 40s and just six weeks into the job, then blurted out that the points were not hers but her former husband's. She is said to have told the stunned class: "They should have been on my ex-husband's licence because he was driving when he triggered a speed camera. But, because he had a lot of points and stood to be banned, we told the court I had been behind the wheel."

The instructor at Kent police's training school in Maidstone told superiors and the internal affairs department is investigating. The probationer WPC has not been arrested or suspended but could face prosecution and lose her job.

An insider said: "It appears to rank with the worst foot in mouth clangers of all time. The instructor asked to borrow someone's licence so he could make a point about traffic law and points. What happened next was completely off the wall. The woman offered hers, and the instructor joked and made lighthearted remarks about the points she had got for speeding. "The recruit told him they had fiddled things to stop her ex-husband getting a ban. Everyone thought she was just kidding, and people were laughing. Then they realised she wasn't joking. It was all a bit surreal."

A police spokesman said that allegations that she perverted justice were being investigated.’
