The hunt was on last night for burglars who stole Wayne Rooney's soccer treasures — as experts warned the haul may be too hot to sell.

Items nicked include an England shirt he wore in this year's World Cup and his Manchester United shirt from the 2005 FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal.

Also snatched in the break-in at his parents' home were a number of England caps and his BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2002 trophy.

Yesterday, furious Wayne visited the £1.2million mansion as parents Wayne Snr, 41, and Jeanette, 39, were thought to be cutting short a holiday in Spain.

A spokesman for the 20-year-old ace said: “Most of the memorabilia from Wayne's childhood and teenage career has been stolen. It's not possible to put a financial value on the items, but they are of huge, huge sentimental value.

Wayne gave them to his Mum and Dad as a thank you for all the support they gave him as a kid in building his career.

“You can't put a price on how much they mean to him and his family.”

Raiders forced a rear window at the house in the Sandfield Park area of West Derby, Liverpool, between 5pm and 11.20pm on Saturday. Wayne's brothers Graham, 18, and John, 15, had been looking after the place while their parents were away.

Police urged the public to help trace the stolen items. A spokesman said: “We ask people to look out in case they are offered for sale on the street, in pubs or on the internet.”

But Chris Peers, of sports memorabilia website IntoSport.co.uk, warned: “No sporting site would touch it.

“We only deal with firms who have legitimate access to memorabilia.”

Auction site eBay said it was the “worst place” to try. A spokesman said: “We can easily track anyone carrying out criminal activities.”
