Top 5 Premier League January Signings Of All Time

Last updated : 04 January 2013 By DSG

The January Transfer window is, thankfully, open once again amongst us in the Premier League. A top class signing, or cheeky 'wheeler dealer' bargain can make a season for certain teams, and although many of the top managers choose not to buy in the winter window, I've decided to look at the Top 5 January Transfer Window Signings for you guys.

5: Branislav Ivanovic ? ?9million - 2008

We start off with Chelsea star Bransilav Ivanovic.

The versatile Chelsea defender, signed for ?9million from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2008 has steadily become a integral part of this current Chelsea squad, and is arguably one of the most reliable, consistent and threatening defenders in the league.

There have been countless of multi-million signings at Chelsea ? and although Ivanovic may not be the fanciest of signings by Abramovich, the Serbian is no doubt one of the first names on the team sheet at Chelsea.

4: Papiss Cisse ? ?8million - 2012

Pappis Cisse arrived in Newcastle from SC Freiburg in an ?8million pound deal, linking up with fellow countryman Demba Ba. The Senegal forward arrived in January and scored a staggering 13 goals in the League in his first debut half a season.

I'm sure we all remember Cisse's wonder goal against Chelsea last season, which he dubbed the 'best goal of my career'.

Last season Cisse had scored 11 goals in his first 10 games for Newcastle, and wearing the iconic number 9 ? the 27 year old was a true shrewd bit of business from Alan Pardew.

3. Nikica Jelavic ? ?5million 2012

Many people doubted Nikica Jelavic when he moved to Everton last January. The Croatian striker was signed from Scottish champions Rangers in a ?5million deal. Many were concerned about the Croat's transistion from Scottish football to the Premier League.

However, Jelavic, similar to Cisse, was a revelation in his first debut half a season with Everton. He scored his 11th goal for Everton last season on the final day of the season ? finishing as Everton's top scorer in the league and overall, even though only coming in January.

Everton had been crying out for a true striker to lead the line for such a long time and Jelavic seems to have answered David Moyes prayers.

2. Luis Suarez - ?23 million - 2011

Suarez has become an iconic figure at Anfield and is currently carrying Liverpool in an attacking sense with his 18 goals this season and his electric performances. Suarez was signed for ?23million after the sale of Fernando Torres and quickly earned the love of Liverpool fans with his impressive displays.

His 39 goals and 21 assists in 79 games for Liverpool have ensured he is more than capable to wear the famous #7 shirt for Liverpool Football Club. Having recently signed a new long term deal at the club, the 25 year old will no doubt write his name into the folklore of Liverpool FC.

1. Nemanja Vidic - ?7million ? 2006

Very rarely does Sir Alex Ferguson venture into the January transfer window. But not even he could have predicted how successful this transfer was going to be. Vicid joined United in 2006, and slowly and surely established himself as club captain.

Since Vidic's arrival, United have gone on to win 4 Premier League Titles, 3 League Cups, 4 Community Shields, 1 Champions League and 1 Club World Cup title.

United have missed the Serbian star, and with his recent return from injury ? Vidic will almost be like a new signing for Ferguson as they reach the end of the busy winter fixture list.

Thats my Top 5 Premier League January Transfers.
