Kingston Park, Newcastle

Ricky Sbragia's side dominated proceedings throughout - Newcastle did not register a single shot on target - and went ahead through midfielder David Jones.

Giuseppe Rossi was a real menace all evening and and only a good save from Newcastle keeper Tony Kay prevented him putting the Reds 2-0 up after a great run and shot from the left edge of the area.

Thirteen minutes from the break Colin Heath grabbed United's second after yet more excellent work by Richardson down the left.

United wrapped up the victory on the hour mark through Rossi, who notched his sixth Reserve team goal of the campaign, after being presented with the ball following a mix-up between Kay and his Newcastle defence.

The result puts United level with neighbours Manchester City on 22 points at the top of the table.

United starting XI: Heaton, Picken, Lawrence, Pique, McShane, Ngalula, Heath, Jones, Ebanks-Blake, Rossi, Richardson.
