UNITED CHAIRMAN – BECKHAM'S PERFORMANCE ‘NOT GREAT'

Manchester United chairman Sir Roy Gardner:

"It didn't take us very long to come to the decision to sell
him. He had two years left on his contract and we didn't
think his performance was that great for Manchester United.

"We sold Beckham and Veron and replaced them with five much
younger players. We reduced the average age of the squad by
two years.”

Lots more talk of the ‘brand’ followed, including a
continuation of the 53 million fans myth, with United also
being compared (in a good light) to Centrica!

Teletext has missed the point completely and reports that
Gardner was criticising Beckham’s on field performance – as
if Sir Roy would know anything about that!
