UNITED U-TURN FOR SENNA AS HARGREAVES' ROAD IS BLOCKED?

Bayern's General Manager, Uli Hoeness:

"We want to build a new, young team and we are not going to sell people like Hargreaves.

"Bayern Munich will never be taken for a ride by big clubs and become weak at the knees as soon as a certain level of money is mentioned.

"If you gain that sort of reputation, then it is all over for you.

"I can't understand all the excitement because this story was over two weeks ago.

"We have made it clear that Owen Hargreaves is not for sale.

"David Gill can phone me up at 8.30 every morning to talk about the English weather or tea but not about Owen Hargreaves."

Bayern manager Felix Magath explains Hargreaves' absence at the weekend:

"He came to me and said he had a touch of flu and I didn't want to take any risks, so I took him out of the squad.

"Fortunately, I have options to replace any player with somebody of equal value."

The Times:

Owen Hargreaves is continuing to agitate in pursuit of a transfer to Manchester United, despite being told that he will not be allowed to leave Bayern Munich.

The England midfield player had a dispute with Uli Höeness, the German club's general manager, over the weekend after his comments about wishing to join United, but he is prepared to antagonise the Bayern management further as he seeks to secure a move to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes on August 31.

"Hargreaves is well advised to keep quiet," Höeness said yesterday. "Otherwise I will be very angry and that will not be good for him. I can't understand that after two discussions between us he is still forcing the issue. He won't be released under any circumstances. He needs to accept the decisions of those above him and to show some respect."

United are hoping to conclude a £17 million deal but are being forced to consider other options, such as Marcos Senna, the Villarreal midfield player, whose agent has indicated that the 30-year-old has tired of waiting for Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, to proceed with a £4 million bid that was put on hold at the start of the month. Jean Makoun, of Lille, is another back-up option.
