UNITED WITHOUT A NUMBER ONE

"I have told the three senior goalkeepers that we haven't got a regular No 1 at the moment," said United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton.

"Ricardo has just arrived and Fabien has just come back while Roy has been in charge lately. He's done himself no harm at all. In fact he's done a lot of good. We had to bring in a third keeper and that was no reflection on Roy or young Ben Williams.

"You always need a senior set up of three experienced goalkeepers at a club like United. Nobody has claimed the place at the moment. It is up to all three to battle it out now. We have a trio of very good keepers vying for one spot.

"It is up to them to make it as hard a decision as possible for the manager."

The young keepers coming through the ranks are highly-rated by Coton:

"I think the ’keeper department here is now the strongest it has ever been in the club’s history. Away from the seniors we have two very highly-rated Under-16s in Tom Heaton and Tommy Lee. They’ve been pushing each other and it is nip and tuck between them. At 17-year level we have Luke Steele who signed at the end of last season from Peterborough. At 19, James Jowsey from Scarborough is looking good and 20-year-old Ben Williams has this season had the experience of travelling with the first team squad and being on the bench. He has come on at an incredible rate over the last two years."

"Quite honestly I now have eight goalkeepers here who I wouldn’t be afraid of recommending for first team duty. Even the Under-16 lads could do it that’s how confident I am about them."
