The pressure was on United to beat Everton as Chelsea broke down Wolves at Stamford Bridge to go eight points clear before United kicked off.

But although it took the Reds a while to get their noses in front against Everton, once Darren Fletcher had volleyed United into the lead, the result was never in doubt with Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia finishing the job off in the second half.

This was United’s biggest win since August.

Sir said after the game:"We have to look at all the games as must-win now.

"We need to get on a run and be somewhere near the top of the league by New Year's Day. Then, in the second half of the season we can have a real go and give ourselves a chance."
