VERON IS STAYING

But not everyone does. At a press conference yesterday,
Fergie reiterated his desire for Veron to stay and claimed
he knew nothing about the negotiations with Chelsea:

“Seba is a terrific player and I want him to stay. I don't
know anything about the speculation. Agents talk to a lot of
people, they have a lot of power and sometimes they can
think different things to the player. But Seba is a mature
man. He is very experienced and he knows what he wants. If
there was a situation arising I'm sure he would talk to me.
He hasn't done so and I'm quite happy about that.

“My impression was that he had settled down, everything had
gone quiet and there was no problem. Seba is a marvellous
player and he is contracted to us. It is going to be
difficult for a deal to be done tomorrow. He will be playing
for us.”

Veron’s agent Fernando Hidalgo said yesterday:

“Chelsea made an offer very recently to Manchester United
for the transfer of Juan Veron. When the offer was proposed
to us we were willing to accept it, as long as the personal
terms would be what the player requested. We have to look at
the contract that Chelsea would be willing to offer and also
to have a resolution with Manchester United.

“I'm not aware of Ferguson’s quotes but obviously Manchester
United have the last word. Both clubs will still have to
agree to the transfer - but Veron would be equally happy to
remain in Manchester.”

The broadsheets take these quotes with a pinch of salt, with
the Grauniad and the Times both still predicting that Veron
will start the season at Stamford Bridge.
