From the M.E.N:

The only man to come anywhere near matching van Nistelrooy's 42 per cent has been Sixties great Denis Law, who picked up 25 per cent - and the only other player to hit double figures has been George Best with 13 per cent.

Internet users tend to be under 35, and that is reflected in the fact that some of the old-time greats barely get a look in.

Imran, from Nelson, backed van Nistelrooy, and believes he is on course to make a few more entries in the United history books: "I think that Ruud is on his way to breaking all kinds of records no matter which competition he plays in.

"He is on his way to being the talisman with the highest number of goals in the Champions League, and will probably get the fastest 100 goals for United by any striker.

"Scoring 18 in 20 Champions League games is just too good to be true!

"Ruud is gonna rule the world, and there is nothing the defenders' union can do about it.

"Long live the flying Dutchman!"

Our poll has even drawn comments from van Nistelrooy's native Holland, where he remains a big hero despite leaving PSV Eindhoven in a £19million move to United last year.

Fan E Mews of Amsterdam said: "Ruud will be the biggest and best striker ever for the Reds."

And South African Craig Michael Titus believes there is far more to Van the Man's game than hitting the back of the net.

He said: "I think Ruud will be the greatest striker at United. He has awesome ability and a hunger to win every game he plays, that is rubbing off on all his teammates.

"He does not only score goals he works his socks off and is an inspiration to all football lovers. All I can say is "Keep on doing what you are doing."

Current standings in the manchesteronline poll to find United's best-ever striker: van Nistelrooy 42 per cent, Denis Law 25, George Best 13, Tommy Taylor 5, Andy Cole 4, Mark Hughes 4, Dennis Viollet 3, Billy Whelan 2, David Herd 2.
