From The Guardian:

'Quizzed by voters, Pérez also firmly denied wanting to sell the England captain David Beckham, or swap him in part exchange for the Arsenal captain, but again underlined his desire to "build a team which will mark an epoch in football".

In a direct answer to one member who asked whether Pérez was planning an offer for the 28-year-old France international, the president-elect replied: "I must repeat that my policy, as from being re-elected on Monday, is to try to sign the best player in the world in every position where we do not already have that. Patrick Vieira is, in my opinion, the best in the world in his position."

On Beckham, responding to a demand from one member that the England captain be sold after a "disappointing season", Perez retorted: "No, I don't think that would be the right idea. His behaviour and the returns we have had on him have been satisfactory, taking into account that this has been his first year at Real Madrid. Beckham is an important player for us and he is an extraordinarily professional individual."

The voting was extended, by an hour, until 9pm last night. Although there was no dispute about hanging chads, a delegation of 200 members arrived by hired bus from Catalunya, the heartland of the enemy Barcelona, to give their votes for Pérez in person rather than follow the postal voting route which had been the subject of a judicial challenge by one candidate, Lorenzo Sanz. By late afternoon the turnout exceeded the entire total of four years ago.'
