The Guardian reports:
‘Wembley executives last night admitted that they are unable to guarantee that the stadium construction will be completed in time for the 2006 FA Cup final to be staged there a year tomorrow.
‘Wembley National Stadium Limited’s chief executive Michael Cunnah acknowledged that there could be a delay in the project. "Multiplex [the building contractors] tell us that everything is on schedule," said Cunnah. "If they are late, everyone will be disappointed but it will not really be the end of the world. The main thing is that we are building a magnificent stadium for an agreed price.
‘"Whenever that is delivered, we will be delighted. Our monitors are in place, of course, but the real people we rely on are Multiplex."
‘WNSL says that until the construction of the roof, the most complicated part of the project, is completed, probably in the autumn, it will not be able to make a judgment about when the stadium will be delivered. If the stadium is not ready, the Football Association will have to enter negotiations for an alternative home for next year’s final, the most likely venue being the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
