WE'VE GOT FOUR STRIKERS

From The Mirror:

"Carlos did well in the summer playing him as a striker all the time. He was trying to get out of his mind that he's a midfield player. When Paul first came here he was a striker. So he's got that back into him."

Having lost three attackers in the last 14 months - Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham - who can bring a breath of fresh air to the increasingly stale forward line?

Ferguson's answer - Paul Scholes - is a little surprising. First, because he's injured. Second, because he's a midfielder.

But there is method in the great man's madness. The ginger-haired one could be back "in three to four weeks because he's come out of the knee operation very well" and new coach Carlos Queiroz is convinced Scholesy will deliver up front.

The critics blame Queiroz for introducing unfamiliar methods at Fortress Carrington and of being ignorant of the ways of the Premiership, but Fergie goes on the offensive, crediting the former Portuguese coach with transforming Scholes' mindset.

"Carlos did well in the summer playing him as a striker all the time. He was trying to get out of his mind that he's a midfield player. When Paul first came here he was a striker. So he's got that back into him.

"Scholes being injured is a big concern. He offered a great option for us."
