What Lisandro Martinez said to Scott McTominay after winning the World Cup

Scott McTominay has revealed that he received a text from Manchester United teammate Lisandro Martinez shortly after the latter won the World Cup.

Martinez won football's biggest prize on Sunday, with Argentina beating France on penalties in an enthralling final.

The defender didn't come on in that match but played his part in their triumph, appearing in five of their seven matches and starting two of them.

He's now returning to Man Utd and, judging by what he said to McTominay, is as hungry for success as ever despite already winning the biggest trophy of all.

“I messaged Lisandro the other day and said congratulations and he said: ‘We go for the next one’", the Scot said during a fans' conference at Carrington.

“He’s just won a World Cup, so that shows the mentality that is in the group.”

Martinez has won far more trophies than his club in recent times, with Man Utd not lifting one since winning the Europa League in 2017.

McTominay didn't play a part in the campaign and so has never won a senior trophy himself, but is confident that can change with Erik ten Hag at the helm.

"Success will always be winning trophies and that’s the most important thing at this football club," he said.

“With the manager that we’ve got now, we’ve got a really good opportunity to start that journey, especially this year.

“We’ve got a really good chance to implement ourselves and really start pushing. I feel like this is the year where we can go for it and that’s firmly reiterated by all the coaches in the squad. They firmly believe that."
