Mark Palios said: "From what I know of what the allegations were, we would have not deemed that it was appropriate that we should play Nicky Butt.

"I do understand that the police eventually dropped the matter and he would have missed several England games and it is not an attempt to pre-judge anything.

"It is just a question of at what stage do you say a player should or should not pull the England shirt on? The perceived wisdom is that if a guy is arrested then he can't play.

"There are other situations where that occurs and it generally tends to occur with people in the public eye.

"Police are suspended before they are charged while an investigation is ongoing and you've got to consider things at the England team level.

"These guys are very much in the public eye, very much at the pinnacle of the game and have a responsibility to the shirt."

DBwhateverhenow is: "We want this sorted out before the next international comes around against Portugal in February. It can't drag on.

"The players' relationship with the FA is not good at the moment and that's due to the two situations that have been recognised by everyone around the country.

"We want it to get better and the only way it can get better is by the players talking to the FA, me talking to the FA and the manager talking to the FA about changing the whole strategy where these decisions have come from."
