Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has explained why Bruno Fernandes took and missed the decisive penalty in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Arsenal rather than Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Gunners raced into a two-goal lead through Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka before Ronaldo pulled one back before half-time - his 100th Premier League goal.
United were awarded a penalty after the break when Tavares handled the ball in his own area and Fernandes stepped up to take the spot kick, but his effort struck the outside of the post.
Granit Xhaka settled the scores with a 25-yard screamer with 20 minutes remaining, bringing greater emphasis to Fernandes' miss.
When asked who decided on taking penalties, Rangnick said: "It's between both of them. Both are penalty takers and Cristiano said to me after the game that he didn't feel well enough in order to take it and that's why Bruno took it.
"In the end, it was about two or three yards a little further to the right but he sent the goalkeeper into the other corner but it only hit the post."

Rangnick also spoke of his anger at key decisions not going United's way. Xhaka's winner came with Eddie Nketiah blocking the view of David de Gea in an offside position, Ronaldo had a second goal ruled out for the most marginal of offsides, a handball against Cedric went unpunished and Anthony Elanga was brought down by Tavares just inside the area.
"The decisions definitely did not go our way, but we don't expect them to happen in our way," Rangnick said.
"But there were three if not four questionable decisions, the third goal was offside, Cristiano's second goal was not offside after having seen the video footage, there was another handball in the first half plus a situation on Anthony Elanga - all four of them went against us. But this is what happens if you are in a situation as we are right now."
